Chapter 1 – THE CUP ON THE KITCHEN ISLAND

Alexander Cole was forty thousand feet above the Atlantic when the security alert appeared on his tablet.

At first, he almost dismissed it.

The Cole mansion generated dozens of routine notifications every day. A delivery at the gate. A door opening after midnight. A motion sensor triggered by one of the groundskeepers.

But this alert came from the interior camera above the kitchen.

Priority movement detected.

Alexander tapped the feed.

The private jet cabin disappeared from his attention.

On the screen, his six-year-old son stood beside the kitchen island wearing the navy T-shirt and gray pajama pants Alexander had seen him in that morning.

Rebecca Stone stood in front of him.

She held a small plastic medicine cup.

Alexander leaned closer.

Henry turned his face away.

Rebecca slapped him.

Alexander stopped breathing.

His son stumbled backward and immediately pressed one hand against his cheek.

Rebecca stepped toward him again.

The microphone picked up Henry’s frightened voice.

“Dad said I don’t have to take anything I don’t know.”

Alexander’s fingers tightened around the tablet.

Rebecca grabbed Henry’s jaw.

His son struggled.

Then she forced the liquid into his mouth.

Some of it spilled across his chin and shirt.

Alexander stood so quickly his seat belt snapped against the armrest.

Flight Attendant Claire turned from the galley.

“Mr. Cole?”

Alexander stared at the screen.

Rebecca wiped the medicine cup with a napkin.

Henry coughed.

Then Rebecca leaned toward him and whispered something the microphone barely captured.

“You make this difficult every time.”

Every time.

Alexander felt something inside him go cold.

This had happened before.

“Turn the plane around.”

Claire froze.

“Sir, we’re more than—”

“Turn the plane around.”

His voice was quiet now.

That frightened her more.

She disappeared toward the cockpit.

Alexander immediately called the mansion.

No answer.

He called the house manager.

Voicemail.
