Claire stepped backward.
Robert stared at her.
Tell me she is wrong.
Claire opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Emma continued.
Claire’s brother owned one of the companies receiving the contracts.
The ballroom became completely silent.
Robert looked stunned.
You knew about this?
Claire finally answered.
It was temporary.
Robert’s jaw tightened.
Temporary?
Claire insisted the company had been struggling.
Her brother promised to return the money once a major project closed.
Emma shook her head.
That never happened.
Claire looked furious.
You had no right to investigate my family.
Emma stepped closer.
The moment military money disappeared, it stopped being only your family.
Robert looked down at the report again.
Then he noticed something.
Emma’s original signature was there.
But the rejection beneath it had been signed with his name.
Robert stared at the page.
I never signed this.
