CHAPTER 2. DANIEL DIDNT LAUGH

Daniel crossed the ballroom.

Everyone slowly became quiet.

Victoria smiled at him.

Relax. It was just a joke.

Daniel ignored her.

He looked at Eleanor.

Are you okay?

Eleanor removed her wet glasses.

Daniel froze.

He had seen those eyes before.

Victoria noticed his expression.

What?

Eleanor lifted both hands toward her black wig.

Then she slowly pulled it away.

Silver-gray hair fell around her face.

Daniel stared at her.

Mom?

The entire ballroom went silent.

Victoria stopped smiling.

Daniel stepped closer.

Eleanor Carter had disappeared from public life months earlier.

Most people believed she was living overseas.

But now she was standing in front of him dressed as a maid.

Daniel looked at the uniform.

Then at the bucket.

Why are you dressed like this?

Eleanor looked toward Victoria.

Because I wanted to see how people in this house are treated when nobody thinks they matter.

The spring breeze was gentle, carrying the faint scent of cherry blossoms.
