CHAPTER 4. THE WOMAN AT THE WINDOW

Daniel stopped.

Everyone looked toward the kitchen window.

An elderly woman stood outside in the darkness.

Her face was pressed close to the glass.

Eleanor went pale.

Daniel noticed immediately.

Who is that?

Eleanor did not answer.

The woman outside raised one hand slowly.

Daniel stepped toward the window.

Then he recognized her.

Margaret.

His mothers younger sister.

Daniel had not seen her in almost ten years.

He opened the back door.

Margaret stood there trembling.

Daniel.

What are you doing here?

She looked past him toward Eleanor.

Your mother called me.

Eleanor immediately said.

I did not.

Margaret reached into her coat pocket.

Then she pulled out a phone.

Daniel looked at his mother.

The color drained from Eleanors face.

Margaret said quietly.

Then somebody used your number.

Daniel stared at the phone.

Suddenly the ruined dinner no longer seemed like the biggest problem in the house.
