The armed man quickly retreated toward the bank.
Everyone began shouting.
For the first time, nobody was watching Ethan.
He pushed himself deeper between the rocks.
Then his shoulder struck something metal.
A small field knife.
Probably dropped by someone months earlier.
Ethan twisted his body until the blade rested against the rope around his wrists.
He started cutting.
The rope tightened against his skin.
The knife slipped twice.
Then one strand broke.
Ethan kept going.
Above him, the men were still distracted by the crocodile.
Finally the rope snapped.
Ethan pulled his hands free.
He grabbed the bamboo.
Then he began moving underwater toward the opposite side of the river.
He had only one chance.
If he reached the mangrove roots before they saw him, he could disappear into the jungle.
Then he heard an engine in the distance.
A boat was approaching.
