CHAPTER 3. THE CROCODILE

The shadow became clearer.

A crocodile moved slowly through the water.

Ethan tried not to move.

His hands were still tied.

The animal passed only several feet away.

Ethan pressed himself against the riverbed.

Then another problem appeared.

The bamboo shifted.

Its upper end began sliding beneath the surface.

Ethan stretched his neck toward it.

One breath.

Then another.

Above the river, one of the armed men suddenly turned back.

He had seen the bamboo move.

He pointed toward the water.

There.

Ethan heard the splash as the man entered the river.

The crocodile heard it too.

Its body immediately changed direction.

Ethan watched from below.

The animal moved away from him.

Straight toward the disturbance.

The spring breeze was gentle, carrying the faint scent of cherry blossoms.
