CHAPTER 2. THE QUESTION THAT SILENCED THE ROOM

Daniel slowly stood.

Yes.

Why?

The older boy reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded photograph.

He handed it to Daniel.

Daniel opened it.

The picture showed a young woman standing beside him years earlier.

Claire.

A woman Daniel had loved before she disappeared from his life.

His hands tightened around the photograph.

Where did you get this?

The boy answered.

Our mom gave it to us.

Daniel stared at both children.

What is your mother’s name?

The younger boy whispered.

Claire Bennett.

Behind Daniel, several guests gasped.

The dark-haired woman immediately stepped forward.

This is ridiculous.

Daniel turned toward her.

Do you know them?

She hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

Daniel looked back at the boys.

Where is your mother?

The older child lowered his eyes.

She said if anything happened, we had to find you.

Daniel stopped breathing.

Then he asked the question everyone in the ballroom was already thinking.

Why me?

The spring breeze was gentle, carrying the faint scent of cherry blossoms.
