CHAPTER 1. THE CHILDREN ON THEIR KNEES

The grand ballroom was filled with wealthy guests when Daniel Carter suddenly noticed two little boys kneeling on the marble floor.

Both wore tiny black tuxedos.

Neither was smiling.

Standing in front of them was an elegant dark-haired woman in a navy evening gown.

Daniel pushed through the crowd.

What is going on?

The woman immediately turned toward him.

Nothing.

Daniel looked at the boys.

One of them was staring at the floor.

The other was trying not to cry.

Daniel crouched in front of them.

Why are you kneeling?

The older boy slowly looked up.

She told us to.

Daniel’s face changed.

The woman stepped forward.

Daniel, they were misbehaving.

One of the boys whispered.

We only wanted to find Dad.

The ballroom became quiet.

Daniel stared at them.

Then the younger boy looked directly into his eyes.

Are you Daniel Carter?

Daniel froze.
