Sarah returned to the ballroom holding the encrypted drive.
Admiral Hayes saw it immediately.
His face hardened.
Daniel followed behind her.
Robert stood.
Where did you get that?
Sarah stopped across the table from him.
Michael Reed.
The entire table went quiet.
Robert looked toward his son.
Daniel lowered his eyes.
Sarah asked one question.
What happened to him?
Robert remained silent.
She repeated it.
What happened to Michael?
Finally the admiral spoke.
He discovered an illegal procurement network involving contractors and several officers.
Sarah waited.
Robert continued.
If the scandal became public during deployment, the entire operation could have collapsed.
So you buried it.
Robert’s jaw tightened.
I contained it.
Sarah looked disgusted.
And Michael?
Robert answered.
Alive.
Daniel looked up.
Sarah froze.
Where?
Robert stared at the drive.
Witness protection under military intelligence.
Sarah could barely believe him.
You let everyone think he deserted.
Robert said quietly.
It protected him.
Sarah looked around the ballroom.
No.
It protected the institution.
Robert did not deny it.
That silence changed everything.
