CHAPTER 4. THE FILE DANIEL THOUGHT WAS GONE

After the speeches, Sarah quietly left the ballroom.

Daniel followed her into the corridor.

Sarah.

Stop.

She kept walking.

Daniel grabbed her attention with a sharper voice.

You dont know what youre getting involved in.

Sarah turned.

Then tell me.

Daniel looked around.

My father buried the Reed investigation.

Sarah stared at him.

Why?

Daniel lowered his voice.

Because Michael found financial transfers tied to a classified procurement project.

Sarah felt her stomach tighten.

Was Michael stealing?

Daniel shook his head.

No.

He was investigating the people who were.

Sarah stepped closer.

Who?

Daniel did not answer.

Instead, he reached inside his jacket and removed a small encrypted drive.

Michael gave me this the night before he disappeared.

Sarah stared at it.

You had his evidence for three years?

Daniel looked ashamed.

I was scared.

Sarah took the drive.

Of your father?

Daniel looked back toward the ballroom.

Of what he would do to protect the Navy.

Then Sarah understood.

The most dangerous person in the room might not be the officer who broke the rules.

It might be the man who believed breaking them was necessary.
