CHAPTER 3. THE GLASS ON THE TABLE

Sarah waited until Daniel stood to speak with another officer.

Then she picked up the glass.

She did not drink.

She smelled it.

Then she looked at the bottle.

The label included a small gold crest.

Sarah pulled out her phone and searched through photographs she had kept from Michael’s case.

There it was.

The same crest.

The same private bottling number.

Only twelve bottles had ever been produced.

Daniel returned.

What are you doing?

Sarah placed the phone beside the glass.

Where did this bottle come from?

Daniel looked annoyed.

My father brought it.

From where?

He leaned closer.

You ask too many questions.

Sarah stared at him.

Michael Reed said the same thing to me three years ago.

Daniel’s expression changed.

Only for a second.

But Sarah saw it.

You knew him.

Daniel sat down.

Everyone knew Reed.

Sarah shook her head.

Not like that.

Daniel looked toward Admiral Hayes.

Sarah followed his eyes.

That one instinctive glance told her more than any answer.

The admiral was connected.

And Daniel had just realized she knew.

The spring breeze was gentle, carrying the faint scent of cherry blossoms.
